Spelling- Sorts 25, 26, 27. Focus on sort 27 this week. The spelling quiz on this unit will be given March 8th. Reading- We are learning the usage of literal vs. non-literal language with figurative language. Students are learning to use similes, metaphors, hyperbole, idioms, onomatopoeia, oxymoron, personification and alliteration. This week, we will be looking at songs that use figurative language and determining the meaning of figurative language. This is a great way for our children to see figurative language in something with which they are familiar. Writing- We will continue to work on opinion writing. Students are reading two articles about the same topic written from two different points of view. Students are then forming their own opinion about the topic using evidence from the articles to support their own point of view. Grammar- Students will learn about compound sentences. Compound sentences have two sentences that are joined with a conjunction. Example- I read two books before going to bed, but my grandma read ten books. We will also be introducing coordinating conjunctions. Ex- for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so (fanboys). Social Studies- We will be finishing our unit on American Government. Students are studying the National, State, and Local Governments, how they are organized, who leads each branch, and the responsibilities of each branch. We have learned what it means to be responsible citizens and why it is so important to respect one another. Milestones- There are several wonderful resources available to help your child prepare for the Milestones assessment in April.
