I hope you made some wonderful memories with your kids over the long weekend! Welcome back Mrs. Fletcher! We are so happy to have you back with your third grade team! Spelling- Sorts 25, 26, 27. Focus on sort 25 this week. The spelling quiz on this unit will be given March 8. Reading- This week we will begin studying figurative language. Our focus will be on similes and metaphors this week. An example of a simile is “as big as an elephant.” An example of a metaphor is, “Your brain is a computer.” Writing- We will continue to work on opinion writing. Students are reading two articles about the same topic written from two different points of view. Students are then forming their own opinion about the topic using evidence from the articles to support their own point of view. Grammar- This week we will be reviewing commas and quotation marks in dialogue, comparative and superlative adjectives, and prefixes, suffixes, and roots. Social Studies – We are starting our unit on American Government. In this unit, we will be learning about the National, State, and Local Governments, how they are organized, who leads each branch, and their responsibilities. Upcoming dates and reminders:

I hope you had a wonderful weekend! Spelling- Sorts 22, 23, 24. Focus on sort 24 this week. The spelling quiz will be on February 14th. Please note that this is one day earlier than normal due to the holiday on the 15th. Reading- This week, we will continue comparing two stories written by the same author, topic, or characters. The goal is for students to compare and contrast the themes, settings, and plots of the stories. Students will have a reading test on text structures and comparing the themes, plots, settings, and characters of two stories on Wednesday of next week (2/20). Writing- We will continue to work on opinion writing. Students are learning to write opinion pieces on topics or texts. Students are learning that opinion writing includes a point of view supported with evidence from the readings. They are learning to introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure that lists reasons. Students are using linking words and phrases (e.g., because, therefore, since, for example) to connect their opinion and reasons. They are learning to write a concluding statement or section. Grammar- Students will continue working on prefixes, suffixes, and roots. Science – Students will be completing the science unit on Fossils. There will be an end-of-unit assessment on Thursday. Students will be able to write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons. Introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure that lists reasons. Provide reasons that support the opinion. Use linking words and phrases (e.g., because, therefore, since, for example) to connect opinion and reasons. Provide a concluding statement or section. We will be completing each of our units of study and finalizing grades over the next few weeks in preparation for the 2nd quarter ending and report cards being sent out. There will be no homework this week as we approach the Winter Break. Please remind to students to return their Sign and Return papers they received this past Thursday. Reading- This week, we will review identifying the author’s point of view, text features, and the main idea of nonfiction texts. We will spend some time doing fun Winter activities. Grammar- This week, we will review what we have learned about verb tenses, types of sentences, and reference materials such as the encyclopedia, thesaurus, and the dictionary. Spelling –There will be no spelling this week. Students will receive a new spelling list when they return from Winter Break. Writing- This week, we will continue working on informative writing. Informational writing will include 5 paragraphs: an introduction to the topic, 3 paragraphs explaining the 3 big ideas or subtopics that support their main topic, and a conclusion. Sign and Returns- Sign and Return papers were sent home this past Thursday. Please sign and have your child return their papers as soon as possible! Thank you! Reading- This week, we will continue learning how to identify the author’s point of view of nonfiction texts. We will also identify our own point of view. Homework for this week will be sent home on Monday, December 3rd and due Friday, December 7th. Grammar- This week, we will continue learning about reference materials, including uses of a dictionary, encyclopedia, thesaurus, world wide web or internet, atlas and almanac.
